“2012 Eye Level Global Forum” hosted by Daekyo Culture Foundation
Arguments have been raised that there is a need for an innovation in 5 different areas of education in order to nurture talented, global-minded human resources.
This was mentioned by Chair Professor Cho, Byeok of Donguk University in his keynote speech during the forum held under the theme of “Proposal for Nurturing Creative, Global-minded Talents”. The Forum was co-hosted by Daekyo Culture Foundation (Headed by Dr. Kang, Young-joong) and World Youth Culture Foundation at the Crystal Ball Room, Lotte Hotel, Seoul on November 22, 2012.
The Forum was attended by nearly 200 participants from home and abroad. The participants were mainly experts in education, teachers and many others involved in the educational industry.
The keynote speech by Professor Cho was followed by a series of presentations and discussions led by Principal Peter Daly of the NLCS Jeju, Principal Shim, Ok-ryeong of Cheongna Dalton School and Mr. Bruce Ballard from Bronx Charter School.
During the forum, Professor Cho stressed, “We need to revise the curriculum at elementary, junior high and high schools to put more emphasis on creativity and building students’ character, and we also need to have more teachers who can deal with emotional part of students through curriculum innovation at educational universities and colleges of education in universities.”
He also said, “Students must be able to study by themselves with the help of e-learning, teachers need to be equipped with neutral educational leadership with which they can address issues or problems arising from the field of education and we need to have more investment for long-term goals of our children.”
In the main session, Principal Peter Daly from the NLCS Jeju and Principal Shim, Ok-ryeong from Cheongna Dalton School engaged themselves in active discussion under the theme of “Efforts and Challenges for Nurturing Global-minded and Creative Talents.”
Principal Daly said, “In order to nurture global-minded and creative talents, every organization at school need to work smoothly, and the school must provide students with a curriculum that can enable them to build communication ability and their ability to sympathize with others.”
Principal Shim stressed, “Creativity and global-mindedness are the most important elements to nurturing global talents. To help students equip themselves with these elements, we need to provide various special activities through which students can build their potential abilities, and we need to educate them to be creative and be considerate of others.”
In the special session, Mr. Bruce Ballard from Bronx Charter School in the United States introduced, under the theme of “Education by the Power of Learners Themselves,” the “Silent Way”, which can help students understand a language using their own insights and imagination. Mr. Ballard won the 21st Eye Level Education Award in the global category.
Daekyo Culture Foundation awarded trophies and prize money to 9 teachers from home and abroad including Mr. Bruce Ballard during the 21st Eye Level Education Award Ceremony which was launched in 1992 in order to praise and appreciate teachers who are demonstrating their “eye level love” and teach our children with great passion.
